Understanding Marine Weather

  • What is convective weather and what ingredients are needed for deep convection to develop.

  • Anatomy of a supercell: lifecycle, structure, wind fields, associated hazards.

  • Airmass thunderstorms vs. Squall lines (frontal weather, derechos)

  • Seabreeze and its effect on squall lines.

  • Radar basics: using onboard and doppler radar to assess risk and timing of thunderstorm arrival.

  • Satellite: Asses convective weather risk before it enters your region using infrared and visible images.

  • What to do if you have time to seek shelter and what to do if you do not have time to seek shelter.
