FAQ’s

  1. What happens if I need to cancel?
    1. 30-90 days prior to your course date you may cancel with a full refund given. 
    1. 2-30 days prior to your course date, no refund will be given but a student may reschedule their course for a later date depending on availability. 
  2. Where can I go to see upcoming classes?
    1. The best place to find our course schedule is on our website, under upcoming courses or calendar. Click here to direct you.  
  3. What time do classes start?
    1. Classes start promptly at 9:00 am and finish around 4:00 pm. 
  4. Do I need to bring water and lunch?
    1. Yes, bring a water bottle and lunch if you would like. You do have an option to purchase a crew lunch from the Leeward Market on 2nd street in Eastport only one block from J World. If you would rather bring your own, please do so! 
  5. How much should I tip the coach?
    1. As always, a gratuity is entirely at your discretion. However, it is standard practice in the industry to pay a gratuity to your instructor. A typical tip would range between 15% – 20% of your course fee.
  6. What should I wear?
    1. You should wear something you feel comfortable in. In the summertime, shorts and a t-shirt work great but it can be a bit cooler out on the water so we recommend bringing a jacket or some sort of long sleeve shirt.  In the Spring and Fall you should wear layered clothing.  Closed toed shoes without black soles are also recommended.
  7. What’s the wind like today?
    1. The best place to check the weather and wind for the day is on Windfinder. You can download it on the app store or click here to see. 
  8. What course should I take?
    1. The first course you should take before completing anything else is Basic Keelboat. Next would be Performance Sailing, then Spinnaker & Raceboat Handling, Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising and lastly Coastal Navigation.
  9. What kind of boats do you have?
    1. Our courses are taught aboard our 26 ft J/80 keelboats and J/32 cruising boats. 
  10. How many students will be on the boat?
    1. The maximum number of students we allow on a singular vessel at a time is 4. 
  11. Why do I need to give my credit card information when booking a class?
    1. A $200 deposit is required when booking a class. The rest of your payment is due no later than 30 days prior to your course. 
  12. What happens if there is bad weather during the time of my class?
    1. We may cancel your lesson if the conditions are deemed unsafe or un-sailable. Examples are if there is no wind present, wind is above 18 knots, or if lightning is present in the area.
