This seminar will provide you with some of the basic principles of seamanship that every boater should know.  Topics will include weather and area conditions, safety equipment, knots and lines, docking, securing a boat, anchoring, towing, running aground and getting off, and avoiding collisions. We’ll also cover safety procedures, including handling heavy weather and person overboard rescue.  You’ll finish this seminar with a greater knowledge and confidence in safely handling a boat out on the water.

Coastal Navigation Certification

This is an ideal course for anyone who wants to develop a solid foundation in navigation principles.  The curriculum for this seminar will cover charts and features, compass errors, plotting, triangulation, dead reckoning, route planning, tides, current vectors, aids to navigation and an introduction to electronic navigation.   This course includes US Sailing certification upon passing the written exam. Class will begin on Saturday and Sunday, both from 8am – 5pm at our facility in Eastport. You will receive a confirmation of your registration request, with an invoice that must be paid prior to the start of the course.

Classes run 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday at our facility, 213 Eastern Avenue, Annapolis, MD.
 
NOTE:  The Coastal Navigation textbook and Chart 1210Tr are included in the cost of the seminar.  When you have registered and paid for the course, we will mail you your Coastal Navigation textbook which you will use to participate in the hands-on seminar. Various tools such as a nautical parallel ruler, rolling plotter, a set of dividers, number 2 pencils and a soft eraser are required to participate in the seminar.  J World will not be supplying these tools so you will need to obtain your own navigation tools for use in the class.  Recommended tools are:
  1. 1. A Nautical Parallel Rule (Weems and Plath #141 , 15”: w/ brushed aluminum arms) and/or
  2. 2. Rolling Plotter (Weems & Plath Parallel Plotter #120),  Having both plotters (1 and 2) is ideal.
  3. 3. Dividers (Weems & Plath Ultralight Divider #176)

Planning a Charter Sailing Vacation – Online Seminar

For anybody interested in planning their own Charter Sailing Vacation, this is the seminar for you!

J World Annapolis and the Chesapeake Boating Club have been hosting winter sailing vacations for their alumni and members for years and have lots of experience on planning these trips. This seminar will teach you all of the many details you need to consider when planning a trip of your own. You will learn topics like doing a Bareboat charter where you are the captain or doing a charter with a hired captain. Topics like what sailing location you wish to charter in and what are the local regulations for doing that. Information about various charter companies and differences between a catamaran or a monohull for your trip. How to prepare and submit your sailing resume to the charter company. How to plan for provisions, sailing routes, weather, transportation to and from the airport. What tools you will use to navigate in an area you are not familiar with. All this and much more will be discussed during this seminar.

USCG Nautical Rules of the Road Seminar – Online Seminar

This seminar will cover the USCG Nautical Rules of the Road.  Whether a sailor or power boater, this is essential knowledge that applies to all of us on navigable waters.  We will cover basic terms and definitions, steering and sailing rules (both in normal and restricted visibility), right-of-way situations, required day shapes, light configurations (for boating at night), as well as required sound signals and distress signals.  The course outline is based on the USCG Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook (recommended), but a copy of the book is not required to take the class.
