Spinnaker & Race Boat Handling
Our spinnaker course is a racing-oriented course that covers sail trim, asymmetric spinnaker handling, and crew organization for sailors with solid helm and sail trim skills.
We work on mark roundings, speed control, steering techniques, and crew communication. This course is perfect for skippers as well as crew looking to improve their mechanics and race course form.
Who should take this class?
Anyone interested in learning how to race or race better should consider taking this course.
Prerequisite?
None, but we recommend anyone considering this course should have completed a J World Basic Keelboat course or have sailing experience that is commensurate with the Basic Keelboat Standard.
What will I learn?
Spinnaker & Race Boat Handling teaches any sailor how to handle an asymmetrical spinnaker to improve their enjoyment of downwind sailing. Cruising sailors and racing sailors alike should take this course because we show you how to properly rig, set, trim and douse spinnakers on any boat. If you are interested in training your crew on your boat, contact us about private onboard instruction.
Certification?
Students will receive a J World Annapolis certificate of completion.
How will I spend my time?
This two day class runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Some time will be spent in a classroom environment discussing the curriculum but most of the time will be spent on a J80 on the water.

*Symmetric spinnaker instruction can be provided upon request in advance of the course date.
Note: Running this course requires at least 2 or more students to register for each 2 day course. After you register, you will be notified in advance if the dates you registered don’t have sufficient students registered to run the course on those dates so you can switch to a different weekend.
What should I bring?
Comfortable weather appropriate clothing, athletic shoes, and plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Lunch can be ordered from us or bring your own! If you need anything else, give us a call and we can help.
