This course is the best way to get the basic knowledge required to become a capable crew member and discover sailing.  Whether you are new to sailing or returning to the sport\, this class gets you started on the right track. \nPrerequisites?\nNone! \nWhat will I learn?\nWind awareness\, points of sail\, solid boat handling including steering\, tacking and gybing\, sail controls\, docking and departing\, heaving to and how to stop while sailing. \nCertification?\nThe course comes with a certificate of completion from J World Annapolis.   While there is no US Sailing certification\, this course is the equivalent of the first two days of the US Sailing Basic Keelboat course\, and you may choose to continue your education to receive that certification by completing the additional training days on another weekend\, or during the week. \nHow will I spend my time?\nThis two-day class runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.   One hour of classroom discussion kicks off each day and the rest of the time is spent on the water sailing. \nHow do I register?\nThis class is offered every weekend from April 1 to October 31\, and is also available on Monday and Tuesday of each week. DESCRIPTION:Coastal Navigation Certification\nThis is an ideal course for anyone who wants to develop a solid foundation in navigation principles.  The curriculum for this seminar will cover charts and features\, compass errors\, plotting\, triangulation\, dead reckoning\, route planning\, tides\, current vectors\, aids to navigation and an introduction to electronic navigation.   This course includes US Sailing certification upon passing the written exam. Class will begin on Saturday and Sunday\, both from 8am – 5pm at our facility in Eastport. You will receive a confirmation of your registration request\, with an invoice that must be paid prior to the start of the course. \nClasses run 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday at our facility\, 213 Eastern Avenue\, Annapolis\, MD.\n \nNOTE:  The Coastal Navigation textbook and Chart 1210Tr are included in the cost of the seminar.  When you have registered and paid for the course\, we will mail you your Coastal Navigation textbook which you will use to participate in the hands-on seminar. \n\n Various tools such as a nautical parallel ruler\, rolling plotter\, a set of dividers\, number 2 pencils and a soft eraser are required to participate in the seminar.  J World will not be supplying these tools so you will need to obtain your own navigation tools for use in the class.  Recommended tools are: \n\n\n\n1. A Nautical Parallel Rule (Weems and Plath #141 \, 15”: w/ brushed aluminum arms) and/or\n\n\n\n2. DESCRIPTION:Our basic keelboat/2-weekend format is designed for those who want a comprehensive Learn to Sail course but are unable to take a course with us on weekdays.\nUpon successful completion of Basic Keelboat\, graduates will have successfully demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple day sailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions.  This course is conducted onboard our high performing 26′ keelboats – J/80’s.  Your sessions can be scheduled for either consecutive weekends or at other intervals – making our two-weekend course the most flexible way for you to learn to sail.  For each weekend\, you will be placed onboard with others at the same progression level. \nBy taking this course\, we guarantee that you will acquire the skills and knowledge to pass the written and skill evaluation for US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification.  If you do not pass during your course\, you may come back for makeup instruction and testing until you do at no additional charge. \nUS Sailing Standards \nSo who should take this class? \nEverybody interested in developing a strong sailing foundation while acquiring US Sailing’s Basic Keelboat Certification. \nHow will I spend my Time? \nThis course is held from 9:00 to 4:00 over the span of two weekends.  The weekends do not have to be sequential but is our recommendation to complete the two weekends as close together as possible. This course is the best way to get the basic knowledge required to become a capable crew member and discover sailing.  Whether you are new to sailing or returning to the sport\, this class gets you started on the right track. \nPrerequisites?\nNone! \nWhat will I learn?\nWind awareness\, points of sail\, solid boat handling including steering\, tacking and gybing\, sail controls\, docking and departing\, heaving to and how to stop while sailing. \nCertification?\nThe course comes with a certificate of completion from J World Annapolis.   While there is no US Sailing certification\, this course is the equivalent of the first two days of the US Sailing Basic Keelboat course\, and you may choose to continue your education to receive that certification by completing the additional training days on another weekend\, or during the week. \nHow will I spend my time?\nThis two-day class runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.   One hour of classroom discussion kicks off each day and the rest of the time is spent on the water sailing. \nHow do I register?\nThis class is offered every weekend from April 1 to October 31\, and is also available on Monday and Tuesday of each week. DESCRIPTION:Our 3-day cruising course teaches the fundamentals of cruising aboard larger\, more complex cruising boats. \nOur Three-Day Basic Cruising course introduces you to larger boats.  You will learn boat systems including diesel basics\, electrical\, plumbing\, through-hull fittings\, propane system\, galley\, safety equipment\, roller furling and self-tailing winches.  You will work on anchoring\, maneuvering under power\, docking\, reefing\, dinghy operation\, crew overboard recovery\, coastal navigation and more! After completing this course\, you will have the skills and confidence to skipper a similar sized boat in moderate conditions in protected coastal waters. \nUS Sailing Basic Cruising Certification \nThis course is the second certification in the US Sailing certification series.  The pre-requisite to earn a Basic Cruising certification is the Basic Keelboat certification\, but sailors with comparable experience are welcome to enroll as well. \n Schedule & Curriculum \nThe course is typically scheduled Friday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.
