|Recurring Event (See all)
Monday through Friday

The Basic Keelboat course is the most comprehensive learn to sail course there is.

We start the keelboat course on board the boat introducing you to the basic boat parts and how to rig the sails. Next, we’ll help you develop wind awareness and its relationship to the boat.  You will get underway without using a motor and move into basic maneuvering drills including tacking, gybing, and points of sail.

The curriculum includes rules of the road, maneuvering in tight areas, light and heavy wind sailing techniques, principles of boat balance, seamanship skills, knots, reefing, anchoring, docking, mooring approaches, crew overboard recovery, basic navigation, introduction to spinnaker, crew responsibilities, and destination sailing.

Classroom presentations include:

Sail Trim and Balance, Principles of Seamanship and Fundamentals of Navigation.  You will complete this class with the skills and confidence to competently skipper or crew a small to medium size keelboat in protected waters in light to moderate wind and waves and the US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification is awarded at the end of the course.
