Charleston to Annapolis Passage
April 19, 2015 - April 24, 2015$1995
J World Annapolis is moving our 40′ J/120 Euro Trash Girl north in preparation for the Annapolis/Newport Race. The trip is being offered as a US Sailing Coastal Passage Making class and will involve not only offshore work but also some time in the intracoastal waterway.
The trip will span 6 days with the first day preparing the boat and provisioning. Each day a skipper will be assigned a lead the crew (students) in the day’s events demonstrating their ability to responsibly skipper a 40ft sailboat with an auxiliary engine during coastal passage. The weather conditions may vary throughout the trip but each person will get the chance to take actions necessary to safely keep the boat moving towards its destination during the day or night and with all levels of visibility. Ideally you already have the prerequisites for completing this course; US Sailing Bareboat Cruising and CoNav Certifications. If you don’t, you will need to complete these prior to receiving your certification for this course.
All the students will get to demonstrate the required practical skills of:
- Vessel inspection for proposed passage; standing rigging, running rigging, systems, electronics, engine and safety equipment.
- Sail inventory
Additionally the you will have the opportunity to demonstrate the proper operation of navigation equipment, show seamanship skills, direct the crew and make safe decisions with respect to the weather, proposed track, crew rest and crew condition of performance. You will maneuver the boat leaving the dock/returning and organized the crew such that the boat is kept safe and they are too. You will participate in the decision as to crew composition and watch standing.
Trip is approximately 550nm/4.5days long and during that time you will have many opportunities to demonstrate:
- Use of ship’s log, boat control, radio protocol, use of coast pilot publications, calculation of tides/currents, taking fixes, steer at night, change sails and all the fun that is involved in an coastal passage on a performance sailboat.
- Study up on your weather forecasting because you will learn to consider the weather to plan the passage and coordinate with the crew to determine a fair and balanced watch schedule. Included in this trip you will get hands on experience handling the safety equipment but not to the extent of activating the life raft.
- We will discuss that part and you are welcome to attend J World Annapolis’ future OPS training where a life raft operation is demonstrated. The trip involves some time in the intracoastal waterway so you will become familiar with bridges and shoal water.
Join us for the trip back up north and gain your US Sailing Coastal Passage Making Certification at the same time. Check the J World Annapolis website for further details, pricing and scheduling changes.
